About us

Built by community, for community.

HACCT is a small, volunteer-led charity working to advance African-Caribbean culture in Huddersfield and the surrounding area. From the annual Carnival to year-round workshops, we exist to celebrate our heritage and share it with the next generation.

Our objectives

Three purposes, one mission

  1. To advance, promote, encourage and develop appreciation of and participation in African-Caribbean culture — including Carnival and street arts, their traditions, music and crafts in particular but not exclusively — through the provision of arts workshops, activities and events throughout the year and by the promotion and organisation of an annual Carnival in Huddersfield.

  2. To further and benefit the residents of Huddersfield and the neighbourhood, without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race, disability, age or of political, religious or other opinions, by associating together the said residents and the local authorities, voluntary and other organisations in a common effort to advance education and provide facilities for recreation.

  3. To advance any purpose which is exclusively charitable according to the laws of England and Wales for the benefit of the public in Huddersfield and the surrounding area, by the provision of grants and funding to local charities as the trustees shall determine.

16,000Caribbean diaspora · Huddersfield

Built by community, run by community, for community.

Huddersfield is home to one of the largest African-Caribbean populations in the region — around 16,000 people whose heritage shapes the cultural life of the town. HACCT exists to advance and celebrate that heritage, serving every generation from primary school children to elders of the Windrush generation.

Our work is led by community volunteers who give their time year after year, in partnership with schools, councils and other voluntary organisations. We're entirely independent and rely on funding, grants and donations to keep our programmes free at the point of use.

As a Black British woman of Caribbean heritage, preserving and sharing my culture is vital for my identity and community. I started as a carnival volunteer in 2018 and became a Trustee in 2023 to help save HACCT. Being part of an organization that promotes our cultural heritage, especially through the Huddersfield Carnival, is crucial. The carnival and the art of Mas are significant to many of Caribbean heritage, and it's essential to keep these traditions alive for future generations. By supporting carnival arts and our legacy steel pan, we help preserve our culture within the Caribbean community, the wider African diaspora, and the diverse cultures of Kirklees.

Growing up in Huddersfield, the Carnival was always a highlight. The streets burst with color, music, and joy, showcasing the town's incredible community spirit. It wasn't just an event; it was a powerful symbol of unity and pride. The steel drums, vibrant costumes, and smiling faces created an atmosphere of belonging. Huddersfield Carnival taught me the strength of coming together. Now, I feel a deep desire to give back and keep that energy alive. Joining the Carnival team allows me to honor my cherished memories and contribute to something bigger — bringing joy, unity, and lasting impact to Huddersfield year after year.

    Sara Dearnley

Committee member since 2008Trustee since 2018

I joined HACCT in 2018 when the previous trustees were no longer able to continue organising the carnival. I wanted to help preserve a tradition that I had grown to love. Carnival brings a unique feel-good atmosphere—the music, the energy, and the sense of togetherness are truly uplifting. My daughter and I have been involved with a local mas band since 2008, and I love how they work as a team to create costumes and dance routines for the event. Carnival is also a vital celebration of Black Caribbean culture, bringing people from different backgrounds together in unity and giving those from disadvantaged communities something to take pride in. It is a tradition that needs to be passed down to future generations and not lost.

Growing up, my family emphasized promoting our culture positively. When I moved to Huddersfield 16 years ago, I sought a platform to encourage diversity and Caribbean heritage. Carnival is a vibrant expression of our traditions, showcasing creativity, unity, and pride. Supporting carnival funding ensures these cultural events thrive, allowing future generations to connect with their roots and embrace diversity. I'm committed to fostering understanding, strengthening community bonds, and celebrating the African and Caribbean community in every aspect of life.

I fell in love with West Yorkshire when I visited in 2006. Moved back to London in 2010 for two years but missed Yorkshire's beautiful landscapes, so returned in 2012. I used to be active in cultural activities and looked for an organisation whose key role was to share, promote and preserve Caribbean culture. HACCT fitted the bill. I was also interested in learning new skills and meeting new people.

Growing up, Huddersfield Carnival was a big part of my life, but joining HACCT was about more than just the Carnival. It’s about giving back and helping to strengthen the local community while preserving and celebrating our culture for future generations.

    Natasha Dennis

    Trustee since 2024

Being part of HACCT is crucial to me because I want to promote cultural education in Huddersfield. HACCT unifies communities to understand and celebrate African Caribbean heritage. Without such organisations, this heritage risks being diluted and lost. I am committed to maintaining and sustaining this heritage in Huddersfield and its surroundings. Additionally, I support expanding cultural knowledge and growth across various communities and generations.

I LOVE carnival! Huddersfield Carnival has always been a huge part of my life, with my parents organising it since its inception over 40 years ago. It's a vital highlight in Huddersfield's cultural calendar, uniting communities and showcasing Caribbean culture at its finest. I’m passionate that we, the community of Huddersfield, must ensure the carnival continues for future generations – Huddersfield would be less vibrant and diverse without it. Tradition and culture are essential for understanding our roots and must be preserved at all costs.
